This collection contains correspondence, letters, telegrams, photoprints, a speech, legal documents, genealogical materials, and a broadside. An important series is the Sterling J. Foster (1822-1899) papers, 1842-1912, which contains genealogical materials on the Foster, Heard, Johnson, Magruder, and Fielder families; legal documents, primarily involving land transactions around Union Springs, Bullock Co., Ala.; photoprints of Foster's wife, and several of his brothers and sisters; and a broadside, 1859, among other papers. Also important is the Sterling J. Foster (1867-1952) papers, 1895-1935, which includes correspodnence and letters, 1895-1926. His speeches supporting the New Deal on the radio, 1934-1935, are also herein.

Sterling J. Foster was born on 1822 Dec. 16 to Arthur and Hannah Johnson Foster in Greene Co., Ga. He was graduated from Oglethorpe University, and in 1844, from Transylvania University. He then practiced medicine in Ga., and in 1850 married Caroline Virginia Heard. In 1852 they moved to Union Springs, Bullock Co., Ala., and Foster engaged in merchandising, real estate, and developing the railroad in Ala. Virginia Foster Durr (1903-1999) was a civil rights activist and a friend of Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson.
